Knackered, I think I would know a few things about being knackered seeing as its 4am and I am up and ready for a sixteen hour work day. This the norm for me.
But I find that the deepest sleep comes from being tired and it is truly an experience when you finally let go of the toughness of work to sink yourself into the softness of your mattress and drift off into the abyss.
When you’re knackered I think you find yourself connecting with your true inner self, the one that doesn’t give a crap about anyone or anything else at that moment. I find myself either at my most irritated or most accommodating when I’m tired. Because I either want to tear into the person pissing me off or want to get over the altercation as quickly as possible just to get some bloody rest.
Over the years I have realised that I get tired a lot more easily, I remember being up all night reading books, not studying, the night before my finals and still breezing through the day easily.
Nowadays I know I have to get to sleep because if I don’t then I won’t be able to make it through the day without being completely knackered.
On the off-chance that I get into a game or movie that keeps me up late, tiring me out the next day, I have developed a few home remedies to lift me back up to working condition.
The first one is sugar. Sugar gives a great boost to energy levels initially but you have to know that what goes up, must come down and when you eventually crash it’s not going to be pretty. Basically anything sweet, sodas, energy drinks, white chocolate, not real chocolate thought because they contain serotonin which makes you more relaxed than energized.
How about a glass of lemon water? I find that a dash of freshly squeezed lemon in a glass of water with a pinch of paprika is one of the best pick me ups you can find that isn’t carbonated. It also helps that lemon is not bad for your body either.
And last but not least a ginger tea that consists of about two tablespoons of squeezed ginger juice, a pinch of cardamom, pinch of turmeric, a dash of honey and a couple more slices of ginger, stirred in a glass of warm water makes for a great warm energy drink for cold weather.
So in the end being knackered isn’t such a bad thing and if you want to get your levels up you can try one of the remedies I mentioned above but the best cure for being tired is to get some rest. Put your phone down and your head down and get in a nap once in a while and you won’t be so knackered.
